The
Hiawatha
It was a wonderful day, wonderful food & wonderful company! What fun it was to
have husbands & children with us to share our day. We cruised up the Susquehanna
River looking gorgeous in our hats. Quite a spectacular sight from on the boat
as well as on the shore.
OCTOBER MEET & EAT
Circle October 8th! We will be at the Penn Wells Hotel. Lunch will begin at noon
and will be a buffet for $11.71 (all inclusive). Please pay for your lunch at
the front desk and get your ticket there. As you know, our dear friend, Liz Tews,
had planned to have a Trunk Show for us. Prior to her sad & untimely death, she
had also arranged for Christine A. Moore, New York Hat Designer, to be with us.
Christine will be at The Blue Thistle from 11 am until 4 pm. We have invited her
to have lunch with us but as of yet, she has not definitely committed. All
proceeds from Liz’s shop will go to the trust fund that her husband, Dave, has
set up for women in alcoholic crisis.
It is a beautiful drive to Wellsboro especially when the leaves are turning such
gorgeous colors. If you would like to conserve gas, Kim Rothermel has offered to
carpool in her large van. Please call her @ 570-748-3665 to make those
arrangements. Reservations must be in by Tuesday, October 4th by telephone
(570-546-2012) or by email puttinonthehatz@aol.com. Cancellations are only taken
by telephone. If you do not get a response to your email reservation within 24
hours, please send it to me again.
HAVEN HOUSE
This is the meeting that we bring supplies to Haven House who supports victims
of sexual abuse & violence. This year their wish list includes: deodorant & more
deodorant, dish towels, hair brushes & combs & paper towels. Please bring what
you can to the meeting.
SWEETEST DAY
Over 60 yrs ago, a man in Cleveland believed that the city’s orphans & shut-ins
too ofter felt forgotten & neglected. He began to distribute small gifts to
them. Others began to participate. Now the idea floats all over the city and far
beyond and is known as “Sweetest Day”. The 3rd Saturday in October was
designated. It is a chance to remember the sick, aged & orphaned & also, people
whose helpfulness & kindness we have enjoyed! It offers the opportunity to show
others we care, in a tangible way. Hat Ladies are the sweetest ladies on earth,
so I knew you would want to participate on “Sweetest Day.”
A TIP OF THE HAT
Many thanks to Jeanne Baker, Joanne Castell, Bev Ellis, Joyce Fairfax, Gail
Landers, Jane Miller, Velda Starkweather, Jeanette Steumpfle, Louise Ulmer, Lil
VanCampen & Nessie Whaley for helping to sell souveniers and just plain looking
good for the Park Place 50th Anniversary. I especially appreciated the effort
since I was sick and unable to attend.
WELCOME TO OUR NEWEST HAT LADY IN TRAINING
Congratulations to Andy Doebler Gregory & her husband on the birth of Gabriella
Anna Marguerite Gregory who entered the world of Hat Ladies on July 1st.
CHARLESTON TRIP
If you plan to go to Charleston the first weekend in March, now is the time to
make your reservation at The Meeting Street Inn. He has 10 rooms set aside until
Jan. 31st. Prices are week days: $129 + 12 ˝% tax weekends: $209 + 12 ˝ % tax.
These rates are better than last year and are for double occupancy. You have 36
hours to cancel, so if you have any idea that you might want to go, I urge you
to make your reservations. Call 1-800-842-8022 or 843-723-1882. John is the
manager and he told me that he absolutely loves the Hat Ladies! He thinks they
are just great. You will leave Williamsport on Wednesday, March1st and return
home on Sunday, March 4th.
The Meeting St Inn is in the heart of the historic district directly across from
The Old Slave Market & you can walk or find public transportation to almost
anywhere you may want to go. It is furnished with Charleston Rice beds and
replicas of fine mahogany furniture befitting of Charleston. It has a wonderful
courtyard, not to mention continental breakfast and wine & goodies in the early
evening. The agenda will depend on who is going and what they want to do in
Charleston. The city is brimming full of wonderful historic landmarks & fun
things to do. Dawnita Shoemaker will be coordinating the trip. (570-638-0421)
All ladies interested should meet immediately after lunch.
A BLACK HAT
Once again, we are losing one of our lovely Hat Ladies due to a move. We are so
sorry to see Louise Ulmer leave the area and go to State College. She will still
be writing her column in The Webb and she has promised to come give a program in
the Spring and tell some of her great stories. She said she will come to the
meet & eats whenever she can. We will miss you, Louise!
HOT HAT HATPENINGS
THE KALICO KAFE is having a Tea on Saturday, October 22nd. There will be two
seatings. One at 1 pm and one at 3pm. The price is $20. There will be 7 courses.
Seating is limited (40). Make your reservations by calling 570-601-3000. It is

town) and hope that many Hat Ladies will join me there.
HELP WANTED: LADIES WHO WOULD LIKE TO HELP CINDY IN MY ABSENT. PLEASE EMAIL
CINDY @ Ccraddock@suscom.net. Some of you have already offered, but please drop
her a note. She will need someone to help with name tags, registration, etc.
We have so many nice things planned in the future. As you know, after the
October Meet & Eat, my husband & I will be in Charleston for the winter. My
daughter, Cindy, has graciously agreed to take over while I am gone. All the
meetings and programs have been planned and I urge you to give her your support
and help. Anyone who is willing to help her with name tags, etc. please let her
know. You will continue to make your reservations by email or by calling my cell
phone number, 570-974-1020.
I will miss all of you and who knows, may pop in from the South unless it is
frozen up here in Pennsylvania.
NOVEMBER MEET & EAT: VALLEY VIEW NURSING HOME.
This is always fun to Promenade with the residents after a wonderful luncheon
served by the Staff of Valley View. Remember to bring extra hats & mirrors for
the residents to wear.
DECEMBER 10th: GENETTI HOTEL WITH VAL KNITZ
JANUARY 14th: GENETTI HOTEL “SOUPER BOWL”
FEBRUARY 11th: GENETTI HOTEL WITH CINDY KOONS & HER FABULOUS HAT ENHANCERS (like
the one Carmilla wore to her wedding to Charles).
SEE ALL OF YOU AT THE OCTOBER MEET & EAT!
SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY’S EFFORTS TO HELP THE VICTIMS OF KATRINA. THESE
FOLKS ARE GOING TO NEED HELP FOR A LONG TIME, AND THE HAT LADIES WILL DO
SOMETHING FOR THEM IN THE VERY NEAR FUTURE. Put on your thinking hats & come up
with something that you would like to do for the survivors of Katrina. In the
meantime, KEEP THEM IN YOUR PRAYERS! And keep Liz Tew’s family in your prayers
too.
HATFULLY,
ANNE
P.S. I still have a few Hat Lady DVDs left if any one would like one. $8.00
